The historic mills of the Swabian Forest are an insider tip. Mills are among the oldest technical devices of mankind. Hardly anyone can escape their mysterious fascination. Their often idyllic, mostly lonely location has fired people’s imagination for centuries and given rise to stories about millers and mills.
The mill hiking trail (main trail) connects eleven of the most beautiful still preserved mills on a circular route. If the main hiking trail is too long for you, you can choose one of the 5 shorter circular hiking trails with lengths ranging from 10 to 18 km.
For the hiking trail, natural paths through woods and meadows away from noise and traffic have been chosen as far as possible. In this way, a hiking experience has been created which, on the way to romantic mills, at the same time offers the opportunity to experience nature and landscape in their original and varied form.
Such hiking on “nature trails” requires proper equipment, i.e. sturdy hiking boots and surefootedness.
Depending on the weather, some sections can be muddy, slippery and bumpy!

In the valley of the Eisenbach stands one of the oldest mills on the mill hiking trail – It was first mentioned in 1553 as the “Nibelgau Mill”. The half-timbered building has a water wheel with a diameter of 7 meters. With its mill equipment from around 1900, it is still fully functional with its millstones.
WebsiteThe Heinlesmühle, built in the 12th century, is a combined grinding and saw mill. The imposing half-timbered building is the only mill on the mill trail that still has two water wheels. The necessary water is brought in via a long mill canal from the Schwarze Rot.
WebsiteWith its oat tamper, the Brandhofer oil and saw mill is the only one of its kind in the Swabian Forest and thus a showcase example of an “old German oil mill with mallet-wedge press”. In 1830, an oat tamper and an oil mill were installed.
