The district administrator at the time, Wilhelm Brepohl, took the initiative to preserve mills in the Minden-Lübbecke district in 1975 and with his suggestions convinced the district, the cities and municipalities. The wind, water, horse and ship mills have turned the district of Minden-Lübbecke into a mill circle and thus make an important contribution to the region’s heritage conservation.
The thousands of visitors are inspired by the technology of earlier centuries and enjoy the hospitality at the mills. Numerous association volunteers look after the visitors and present the mills in operation, explain the technology and the activity of the miller and are responsible for the maintenance of the mills.
The selected 24 of the 43 mills on the Westphalian Mühlenstrasse offer special programs for visitors. The route is approximately 320 kilometers long and can be driven by car – parts of the route can also be cycled or walked very well.
