This walking route leads through the historic city center of Schiedam. The route starts at mill De Kameel, close to the station and therefore a good starting point. The mill route through Schiedam can be completed in about half an hour. When you wish to extend the duration of the walk, you can include a visit the museum mill De Walvisch or drink a cup of coffee in one of the various cafés along the route.
A good tip is to take a look at the Korenbeurs. The trade of grain suited for the production of gin used to take place at the Korenbeurs. Currently it houses the city library. When you have time left, take the option to explore the National Jenever Museum and find out about the history of the malt grinding mills. A combination ticket with museum mill De Walvisch is possible.

Since February 2018, the mill De Walvisch is de new museum mill, which is in the hands of the National Jenever Museum of Schiedam. In the museum and miller’s section you will become acquainted with the giant malt or burner mills of Schiedam that milled exclusively for the gin industry. They are the highest mills in the world!
Volunteer windmillers operate mill De Walvisch on several days during the week. The mill doesn’t grind the malt anymore, this now happens at mill De Vrijheid, one of the other six malt mills in Schiedam. The mill shop is located on the ground floor and the first floor of De Walvisch. The traditional flour products from De Vrijheid are sold here.
